The short version: The Mobile View extension does not send page content, settings, screenshots or recordings to us, and has no analytics, trackers or ads. Preview and media processing run locally in your browser. This separate website uses analytics only after you accept its cookie banner — see the section at the end.

1. Overview

This Privacy Policy explains how the “Mobile View — Mobile Simulator & Preview” browser extension (the “Extension”, “we”, “our”) handles information. The Extension is built privacy-first and works entirely on your device, with no backend service.

2. What the Extension does

When you click the Extension’s toolbar icon on a regular website, it opens an on-page preview. Classic shows the page in realistic phone or tablet frames; Workspace arranges multiple device previews on a board. You can synchronize scrolling, clicks and typing, take screenshots, and record the current tab in Classic. The optional Moby Vi assistant explains the Extension’s controls locally, without analyzing the website’s content.

3. Information we collect

We do not collect any personal or sensitive user data. The Extension does not:

To render previews and synchronize interactions, the Extension processes page elements and input events locally on the site where it is active. It does not send that content to us or keep a copy of it in extension storage.

4. Settings stored on your device

To remember your preferences, the Extension saves a small set of settings locally via the browser’s chrome.storage.local API. This never leaves your device and is not accessible to us. It includes:

To restore an open preview after a reload, chrome.storage.session temporarily stores the tab identifiers and site origins for active previews. It contains no page content or full page URLs and is cleared when you close the browser.

From version 4.2.0, site-access choices are managed by Chrome, not saved as an Extension preference. Older installations may retain legacy access preferences that the current version no longer uses.

You can erase all of this at any time by removing the Extension.

5. Permissions and why they are used

The Extension requests only what it needs for its single purpose. None of these are used to gather data about you.

activeTab

Act on the page you are currently viewing when you click the icon.

scripting

Inject packaged preview and interaction scripts when you activate Mobile View, and restore an open preview after a page reload. A packaged document-start helper applies device User-Agent and input-behavior adjustments to frames marked as Mobile View previews.

declarativeNetRequest

Temporary session rules let the selected site load in device previews: they remove framing restrictions from subframe responses and set a device User-Agent for preview traffic. The rules apply to subframes in the active preview tab; narrowly domain-scoped rules also cover related Service Worker requests when needed. They are removed when the preview closes. The Extension does not use these rules to block, log or transmit requests.

storage

Save your settings locally on your device (section 4).

notifications

Show a short message when a page cannot be previewed (e.g. chrome:// pages).

tabCapture

Used only by the optional screen-recording feature to record the current tab’s video when you start a recording. The video is processed locally and downloaded to your device — never uploaded or sent anywhere.

offscreen

Runs a hidden document that captures and records the current tab using a stream obtained through tabCapture, because the service worker cannot run the required DOM-based media operations. Recordings are processed locally and are not uploaded to any server.

host_permissions (<all_urls>) — from 4.2.0

Site access is a required permission from version 4.2.0. Chrome may ask you to approve it during installation or an update. Once approved, access to all sites is the default unless you restrict it in Chrome. Mobile View opens the preview when you click its toolbar icon, without its own first-use access chooser, and may restore an open preview after a reload.

Broad access supports previews on arbitrary website domains and cross-origin frames. It enables the packaged preview scripts and temporary declarativeNetRequest rules that remove framing restrictions and apply device User-Agent profiles. Narrowly domain-scoped rules also handle related Service Worker requests when necessary; temporary activeTab access alone does not cover those detached requests. This access is not used to collect browsing history or upload page content or media to us.

You can restrict site access to “On click” or “On specific sites”, or allow “On all sites”, in Chrome’s built-in extension menu or extension settings. There is no site-access setting inside Mobile View. If you restrict access and a site needs a persistent grant to load its preview, Mobile View may show a recovery dialog offering access to that site or all sites, subject to Chrome’s approval. Earlier versions used optional host access and a first-use access chooser.

6. Network activity

The Extension does not send page content, settings, screenshots, recordings or usage telemetry to our servers. It includes no analytics, tracking SDKs or remotely-loaded extension code; its bundled video encoder runs locally. Device previews may cause your browser to make additional requests to the site being previewed, as it loads that site in frames.

7. Screenshots & screen recording

The screenshot feature captures the visible preview, crops it locally, and saves the image to your device as a download. Screenshots are never uploaded or transmitted.

The screen recording feature records the current browser tab using Chrome’s tabCapture API — there is no system “share your screen” prompt, and only the active tab is captured. The video is encoded locally (you can choose MP4 or WebM) and saved straight to your device as a file. Recordings are never uploaded, sent to us, or transmitted to any third party.

8. Data sharing and selling

We do not sell, rent, or share any user data, because we do not collect any.

9. Children’s privacy

The Extension is a general-purpose preview tool, is not directed to children, and collects no personal information from anyone.

10. Data security

We do not maintain a remote store of the Extension’s page content, settings, screenshots or recordings. Your settings stay on your own device under your browser’s protection. Websites loaded in previews make their normal network requests, as described in section 6.

11. Changes to this policy

If functionality changes in a way that affects this policy, we will update this page and revise the “Last updated” date above.

12. Trademarks & disclaimer

This Extension is independent and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Apple Inc., Google LLC, Samsung, or Xiaomi. iPhone, iPad, Pixel, Galaxy and other names are trademarks of their respective owners, used only to describe the device frames the Extension simulates.

About this website (mobileview.app)

The numbered policy above covers the Extension. This separate website handles analytics, embedded video and information you choose to submit through its forms as follows:

Google Analytics

We use Google Analytics 4 to understand basic, aggregated traffic: how many people visit, which pages they open, and roughly where visitors come from. It loads only after you click “Accept” in the cookie banner. If you decline, this website does not load Google Analytics or set its analytics cookies. We do not use this analytics data for advertising. You can withdraw consent by clearing this site’s data and reloading the page. See Google’s Privacy Policy.

Support and uninstall feedback

When you submit the contact form, it sends the name you optionally provide, email address, topic, message, selected images and this website page’s URL through our Google Apps Script endpoint to handle your request. The uninstall feedback form sends the reasons and details you provide, an optional email address and the website page’s URL. Submitting either form is voluntary and does not depend on accepting analytics cookies.

Embedded demo

The YouTube demo loads only when you choose to play it. Playback connects your browser to YouTube’s privacy-enhanced player at youtube-nocookie.com, independently of analytics consent. Google handles those requests under its privacy policy.
